I Dreamed About A Vineyard
I had a dream in which I arrived at a church service which was to be held outside. The metal folding chairs had been set up on top of a vineyard- right on the vines- that belonged to one woman. Even though I arrived early, when I looked for a place to sit, I discovered that there were no more chairs anywhere. People had brought their own drums and were excited and waiting for the service to start. I was told that the people who wanted a seat had all arrived by 2AM. There was a quiet expectancy about the famous group of Christian African drummers who would be featured. I walked around the seats to see if perhaps I could find one in the back. Instead, behind the last row, I encountered the owner of the vineyard. She was resignedly pulling straggling vines out from under the chairs. Except for a few runners with very underdeveloped clusters of grapes that were just beginning to turn purple but had not plumped out enough to tread, the vineyard was trampled underneath the chairs. She was conflicted about her grief at the destruction of her vineyard because of her belief that the church had a perfect right to set itself up on top of it. I took one of the vines from her hand and examined it closely before telling her that I thought we could salvage some wine from the clusters that we could rescue even though the grapes weren’t ripe yet if we soaked them in water first.
